Having Off-Site Storage Units

Having off-site storage units can be tricky. Don’t get me wrong there are definitely times when they are necessary, but many times they are being used to delay decision-making.  I would recommend never paying for one for longer than 6 months, without reassessing what’s in there.

How much does your storage unit cost? Now times that by 12 and how much are you paying per year?  Is what you’re storing worth more than what you would pay in a year? In most cases, it’s not a good use of your money.  Take the time to go through everything and sell, donate, or trash what you can’t or won’t realistically use.

One problem with storage units is that you forget about what is in them. If it does have value then sell the stuff now and get money for it before it loses its value.  Even when you are storing something very valuable in your off-site storage unit you need to take into account the cost that goes into paying for the storage unit.

Because of quarantine, you might have more time than you normally have.  Make the time to go out to your storage unit and look through what’s in there.  You might even find some toilet paper, who knows. Make the tough decisions now and keep your hard-earned money for yourself.  Or hire me to help you virtually. I promise you’ll save money in the long run by having a Professional Organizer help you instead of paying for off-site storage for years.

If you do need off-site storage, make sure it’s organized.  Keep an inventory of what is in there, use good containers, label, and maybe add shelves to make it quick and easy to use it.
