Sometimes you overspend for something you don’t end up liking and then feel bad about it, but getting rid of it or selling it feels like admitting defeat. No one wants to feel ripped off, so instead of getting rid of it, you keep that item because that will somehow make up for all the money you spent. It doesn’t make sense when you try to explain the logic, but it happens, I’ve done it.
I’ve paid too much for something, used it once, and proceeded to haul it through 7 moves, over 13 years. That’s nuts! I might have been able to sell it 13 years ago, but now no one wants it. And I got mad every time I saw it. I could have saved myself so much frustration & hassle if I had gotten rid of it or sold it as soon as I knew I would never use it again.
Yes, you may have spent a lot of money on something. But if you’re not using it, isn’t it more wasteful to let it sit in a closet then to put it back out into the community to be used? If it is worth money, then sell in now before it loses value.
Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how much money you spent on an item. Do you use it or not? That is the question you really need to answer.
