How to Unpack

It can be so overwhelming when you get to your new home because you don’t know how to unpack. When you’re unpacking, the best thing to do is get everything out of boxes.  Open all the boxes for that space and start pulling things out.  Yes, it makes a big mess and takes up a lot of space but you need to be able to visualize how much space each category will need.  Which will help you decide where things should go. If you don’t have a lot of space or have little ones who get into things, then do the best you can.  Every house is a little bit different and things won’t fit the same as they did in your last house.

Zones

Once you have your categories you can start deciding where things will go based on how often you use them.  Put things away based on how often you access them.  A zone: (between waist & eye level) is for things you use most often.  B zone: (from your waist to the floor) is for larger, heavy items or things that don’t get used as much.  C zone: (from eye level to the ceiling) is for rarely used items that are big and bulky, but lightweight, or things that need to stay away from little kids.

Don’t be afraid to move things around if something isn’t fitting.  As you figure out how you move around in your new space you’ll decide what you need the most access to.  It’s also totally normal to find things that you want to donate because you don’t actually need or use them. You can read more about moving and zones Unpacking a Kitchen, Organizing a Kitchen After Moving, and Organizing your Kitchen Efficiently.
