“Why?” is one of the best questions you can be asking yourself while you declutter/edit and organize your things.
Q: Why am I keeping this (item)?
A: Because (person’s name) gave it to me.
Q: But why are you keeping it?
A: Because it’s expensive.
Q: But why are you keeping it?
A: Because I like that person.
Q: But why are you keeping it?
A: I loved it.
Q: Why did you love it?
A: Because it is beautiful and I had nothing pretty at the time.
Q: Do you still love it?
A: …It doesn’t really match my style anymore…and I never use it, so I guess I’ll donate it.
Really getting to the heart of your attachment can be hard to do. It may take time to really admit to yourself some painful realities. Most people declutter in layers because it makes this process easier.
First, remove the broken/trash (stuff you hate). Then the things that you never really liked. Finally, evaluate the harder items: stuff you like but never use, stuff you feel some sort of obligation to use, etc.
