It’s because they can’t see or find what they want when it’s all piled up. So they dump everything and spread it out to make it easier to find what they want. This, of course, makes a huge mess and is frustrating for other members of the family.
If you’re having this problem every day with young children, consider removing half the number of toys from the toy box. If you have older children you can try separating the toys into different boxes based on categories.
Large toy boxes are great for a few big toys, not so great for lots of little toys. Help your children be able to find what they want easily and you’ll both be happy.
