How to Organize a Workbench

Often when I talk to people about organizing I hear some form of, “I need you to organize with (insert family member’s name).”  Unfortunately, we can only change ourselves.  Believe me, I wish I could change other people all the time, but that’s not how things work.

Mindset:

The amazing thing is that when we start working on ourselves and our own problem spots the people around us see the results. Then they want those results for themselves as well.

It doesn’t happen right away, but I often have clients tell me that one day their partner just started decluttering & organizing various spaces around the house.  I love it!  They see the benefits and want to see them in their own spaces. (I forgot the ‘Before Pic’ again.)

Results:

I’ve been working with a client for a couple of months decluttering and organizing various places in their home. Recently, her husband was interested in having me help him tackle this workbench and tool chest in the garage.

He was a bit frustrated and overwhelmed at first, but we worked through each section and got things cleaned and organized.  He had inherited tools from both of his Grandpa’s when they passed away and hadn’t quite figured out a system for everything.

We were able to gather all the tools that went to his nice set and put them back in their box.  He also donated a bunch of tools that he didn’t need.  We cleared off his workbench and organized everything in the brown drawers.  Now he can find what he wants and can complete projects in less time because he’s not searching for what he needs.

Workbench Pride:

He didn’t say much, but his wife said he showed off his clean workbench to the guy across the street.  That’s high praise in my book.  Have you noticed that when you work on your problem areas other family members want to do the same?
