Unpacking a Kitchen

When unpacking a kitchen you need to think about efficiency.  You should store the ‘tools’ you use, close to the place where you will need them.  For example, most people put their pans near the stove.  But you might also keep other things close to the stove like strainers, measuring spoons, or mixing bowls because of how you cook.

Things you use everyday should be in easily accessible locations.  If you chop fruit or vegetables every day then keep that cutting board handy, if not then it’s ok to store it in a less accessible location.  I like for clients to think about their space in zones.

*Tip: Write what is in each cupboard and drawer on sticking notes so that everyone can easily find what they need.

Zones Explained

A zone: (between waist & eye level) is for things you use most often.

B zone: (from your waist to the floor) is for larger, heavy items or things that don’t get used as much.

C zone: (from eye level to the ceiling) is for rarely used items that are big and bulky, but lightweight, or things that need to stay away from little kids.

You might want to rearrange your kitchen if it takes more than two steps to get what you need for daily cooking.  If it isn’t working, change it.
