I had a client once ask why I fill every available space when I’m packing boxes instead of throwing stuff in them. The short answer is, it saves money. Lots of money. When a box is packed efficiently with no empty spaces there is less chance of things breaking. You also use fewer boxes, which saves you the cost of moving empty space.
A moving company told another client it would take two semi-trucks to move their house. I was able to fit it in one semi and a small U-Haul trailer which saved them thousands of dollars on a long-distance move. Packing things as compactly and efficiently as possible can save you lots of money.
Pack Fragile Items in Stronger Ones
The same thing can be applied to furniture. If you’re packing a nightstand you should make sure every drawer is full. I like to pack bulky fragile items, like decor or nicknacks, in anything with a drawer because the wood will protect it much better than a cardboard box will.
I also like to roll my clothing and pack my dresser drawers full. Yes, this makes it heavy, but you can always pull a few drawers out while it’s being carried into the moving truck and put them back in once it’s in there.
Pack Small Heavy Items in Smaller Boxes
When you’re packing smaller heavy items like books or canned goods remember that you still want the boxes light enough to be able to comfortably pick up. It’s best to use smaller boxes or plan on packing lighter items in the tops of these boxes.
Remember:
No one cares more about your things than you do. So if you have something important to be packed, you should take care of that yourself to ensure it is packaged to your satisfaction.
